This species overwinters in the egg stage on cherry trees and migrates to an herbaceous host (mustards) in summer. New colonies are usually first noticed just after petal fall. Colonies enlarge and spread rapidly in late spring and early summer. Black cherry aphid distorts shoots and leaves and can cause considerable damage before migrating in summer.
