Rosy Apple Aphid

These aphids are fortunately uncommon but potentially very destructive.  They tend to occur in the same orchards and along the same edges in most years.  In Washington State, rosy apple aphid migrates to lanceleaf plantain or broadleaf plantain in the summer, then returns to overwinter on apple starting in September.  Natural enemies, such as lady beetles, can reduce colonies early in the spring.  Once colonies get very large, they are difficult to control.
