Codling moth remains the key pest of apples in Washington State. In the absence of treatments, it will damage fruit and prevent export to a number of markets. Mating disruption with semiochemicals is used by the majority of growers to reduce reproductive success. However, mating disruption alone does not usually reduce a population. Virus products are used to supplement mating disruption, particularly in organic programs. Ovicides and larvicides, both organic and conventional are almost always necessary. The use of some of these products leads to disruption of natural biological control of other insects and mites and encourages secondary pest outbreaks.
