Grape Mealybug

Grape Mealybug has a broad host range and can be a pest of pears, apples, and grapes.  In Eastern Washington, GMB overwinters primarily in the egg stage.  A few individuals overwinter as first instars.  The first wave of crawlers emerges from cottony egg masses under loose bark in early Spring and settles on developing buds growing next to the trunk.  A larger wave of hatched crawlers emerges a month or so later.  The second, summer generation damages fruit by excreting honeydew and settling in the stem or calyx area.
